{"id":9785,"date":"2022-02-10T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/blog\/?p=9785"},"modified":"2022-02-10T08:53:28","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T16:53:28","slug":"how-retailers-diversity-pledges-are-supporting-black-owned-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/blog\/how-retailers-diversity-pledges-are-supporting-black-owned-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"How Retailers&#8217; Diversity Pledges Are Supporting Black-Owned Businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In 2021, Schnucks donated $200,000 to the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulstl.com\/sos---save-our-sons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Save Our Sons<\/a> program, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nul.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Urban League<\/a>, as a result of its Round Up at the Register program during Black History Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., February is designated Black History Month, while in the U.K., it\u2019s in October. But whenever it\u2019s celebrated, increasingly retailers are getting behind this observance and running creative campaigns to draw attention to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Schnucks, it\u2019s not just about raising money. The St. Louis-based company also gave teammates the opportunity to reflect on what Black History Month means to them. \u201cWe gathered stories from teammates and featured them on our intranet,\u201d says spokesperson Paul Simon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar events are planned for this year, he says. \u201cBetter understanding the life stories and experiences of others is an important context as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;w=1024&amp;h=1024&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1920 1920w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=225 225w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=768 768w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1152 1152w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1300 1300w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=300 300w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Owned-at-Target-scaled.jpeg?w=1320 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption>Target locations around the U.S. honor Black History Month<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wakefern\u2019s focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Wakefern Food Corp., whose banners include ShopRite and Price Rite Marketplace, will celebrate the rich legacy of Black thought leaders, especially those dedicated to healing, healthy living, and eating well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStore associates will have the opportunity to learn how Black Americans in the healing and culinary fields shaped how we live and eat today,\u201d says spokesperson Marla Camins. \u201cWe\u2019ll host virtual events for our associates to learn about Black American trailblazers and cherished traditions \u2013 including favorite healthy eating recipes \u2013 and share their own experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Price Chopper showcases employees<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Schenectady, N.Y.-based Price Chopper presents portraits of Black historical figures and their achievements on posters, in its circular, and on register screens, in-store radio, and social media. It also highlights Black brands, shares Black teammate recipes and profiles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Black History Month celebration for 2022 builds on the core components of previous years, by giving voice and space to our Black teammates, showcasing the Black-owned and -founded brands with which we partner, and honoring notable Black figures,\u201d says spokesperson Mona Golub.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Soul Food for Southeast Grocers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Southeast Grocers is rolling out the red carpet for Black History Month through a new virtual soul food tour, showcasing meals and flavors that celebrate Black culture. Customers, associates and communities will be able to participate through social media channels and store communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And last year the company launched its new Supplier Diversity Connect program, in partnership with RangeMe, which allowed it \u201cto expand our network of suppliers, to discover more quality local products our customers will love,\u201d says Meredith Hurley, director of public relations and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southeast Grocers sponsored last year\u2019s Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in its hometown of Jacksonville and in 2020, created the Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity Grant Program to support nonprofits serving diverse populations in the fight for racial equality and social justice, and address the racial disparities in education, food insecurity and health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>British support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.K., this past October Sainsbury\u2019s focused on four key themes: 1) celebrating African and Caribbean food; 2) exploring Black-owned businesses; 3) celebrating Afro-textured hair; and 4) supporting the Black community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sainsbury\u2019s worked with Black writer Bakita Kasadha to produce a video with its colleagues, using poetry she wrote for the company. The poem is an account of the realities, including the highs and lows, of being Black in Britain and growing up Black in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retailer Morrisons used the theme \u201cProud to be\u201d and celebrated in many ways. It featured several of its Black employees in videos showing how to make meals such as the Caribbean dish escovitch fish, jollof rice, and grilled lamb and attieke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marks &amp; Spencer doubled its donations to Black charities during October and asked shoppers to select them as their \u201cSparks charitable donation.\u201d The company also highlighted Black employees and shared their stories about why they\u2019re proud to be Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1272\" height=\"1310\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;w=1024&amp;h=1024&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"M&amp;S honor BHM\" class=\"wp-image-9788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=1272 1272w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=291 291w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=994 994w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=50 50w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MS-BHM2.png?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1272px) 100vw, 1272px\" \/><figcaption>Marks &amp; Spencer honor Black History Month<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focusing on suppliers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Schnucks also runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/nourish.schnucks.com\/news-releases\/schnucks-announces-new-supplier-diversity-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supplier diversity program<\/a> during February, and expects it to run again this year. This program highlights Black-owned businesses, and this year, for the first time, will feature a distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe share the company\u2019s story and highlight their products,\u201d Simon points out. \u201cWe\u2019re always striving to increase our representation of Black-owned and other diverse-owned businesses, and of course, one of the ways we find vendors is through our partners at RangeMe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wakefern will highlight Black social media influencers who embrace meal time as a way to express what Black History Month means to their families using the hashtag&nbsp;#MeaningfulMeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Kroger, the goal during February is \u201cto build awareness, help our minority suppliers increase sales of their products and highlight our diverse associates,\u201d says Kristal Howard, a company spokesperson. In other years, the featured Black brands experienced a significant sales lift vs. the prior year, further advancing their businesses, she points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year the company once again ran its supplier inclusion video series for customers and associates, featuring Black food producers, their stories and recipes featuring their products, and plans to run it this year, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInclusion is one of our core values, and we want to provide other Black vendors the opportunity to participate,\u201d the spokesperson points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to celebrate Black History Month.
