A new sport? Crafting? Pet ownership? Obsessively cleaning your house?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My daughter and I started making rooms out of shoe boxes and odds and ends we found around the house. What began as repurposing junk has stretched to purchases of items like popsicle sticks, tee-lights, and paints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.22.42-AM.png?auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"Arts and crafts\" class=\"wp-image-9666\" width=\"370\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.22.42-AM.png?w=746 746w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.22.42-AM.png?w=268 268w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.22.42-AM.png?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone\u2019s lives are different now than they were before March 2020. Because of this, there have been huge changes to what general merchandise is selling and what\u2019s likely to sell during 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most retail sectors saw growth last year, especially apparel, points Neil Saunders, Managing Director and Retail Analyst at GlobalData\u00a0in New York City. Clothing sales dipped during the beginning of the pandemic since everyone was staying home. Now socializing and back to work are on the horizon, and consumers are refreshing their wardrobes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/blog\/how-the-supply-chain-disruption-is-sparking-holiday-risk-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supply chain<\/a> issues have put a damper on sales of general merchandise, especially of products coming from Asian markets, adds David Marcotte, Senior Vice President of global retail and technology for Kantar, a data and consulting firm with headquarters in London and New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Homewares<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homewares continue to do well \u201cbecause we continue to spend a lot of time at home and people are doing big projects since they have money from not traveling and going out,\u201d says Saunders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.20.03-AM.png?auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"Dave Marcotte\" class=\"wp-image-9663\" width=\"300\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.20.03-AM.png?w=742 742w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.20.03-AM.png?w=268 268w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.20.03-AM.png?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this isn\u2019t limited to one category. Consumers are buying home improvement products, furniture and smaller items like lamps, bed linens, and d\u00e9cor pieces \u201cto finish projects and to make the home more comfortable,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sales of larger products are doing less well because imports of them \u2013 items like sofas and beds \u2013 have been held up, Marcotte points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand for kitchen products also remains elevated, Saunders says, since consumers are still eating more at home, even though this demand has dropped from the height of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.24.20-AM.png?auto=format%2Ccompress\" alt=\"Neil Saunders\" class=\"wp-image-9669\" width=\"303\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.24.20-AM.png?w=746 746w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.24.20-AM.png?w=268 268w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-13-at-9.24.20-AM.png?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of this demand comes down to us upgrading the cookware we already have, but some also comes from new habits, like baking bread, since we\u2019re home more. Plus, adds Saunders, people\u2019s confidence in the kitchen is up so they want to buy fancier products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this will likely slow down in 2022. \u201cIt\u2019s discernibly dropped off in 2021 because there\u2019s only so much people can buy,\u201d Marcotte points out. \u201cI think we\u2019re close to saturation for kitchenware.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sports products<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we\u2019ve leaned into health, fitness has also received a boost over the past couple of years, increasing sales of sports equipment and apparel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many consumers canceled gym memberships \u201cand took fitness into their own hands,\u201d Saunders says. Sales of bikes and free weights especially surged, but so did running shoes and apparel, all basics for keeping fit at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Electronics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electronics are doing well, largely because consumers have more money to spend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sales of printers, computers, routers, etc. increased due to adults working at home and kids doing school at home. \u201cEveryone needed to be connected so we saw a real surge in office and learning-related technologies,\u201d Saunders points out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the same time, we also saw a surge in some of the more leisure-oriented technologies like TVs, surround sound, entertainment systems,\u201d he adds, since people were not socializing out of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other items that did well were secondary items like earbuds and earphones, better cameras, and ring lights, for improved Zoom calls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cleaning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who didn\u2019t clean their house obsessively in 2020?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antibacterial cleaners, wipes, and the like were in short supply during much of the pandemic. In addition, everyone cleaned their houses more because they were spending more time in them, and as a result, they both created dust bunnies, and saw them scampering around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will stick around for a while, Saunders believes. \u201cIf you\u2019re home, it\u2019s natural that you should consume more cleaning products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/blog\/cleantok-the-most-satisfying-cleaning-trends-and-products-from-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cleaning products<\/a> that went viral on TikTok and left shelves empty for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pet industry was growing before the arrival of COVID, but now it\u2019s booming, much of it driven by consumers acquiring animals during the pandemic, but also because we\u2019ve spent more time with our furry friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pet toys, food, necessities like bowls and litter trays, even apparel, did well over the past two years. Saunders expects demand for pet items to remain elevated because pet ownership will remain up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not just cats and dogs, though, Marcotte points out. People have been welcoming horses, small pets, and exotic animals into their lives, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arts and crafts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past two years, parents have invested a lot more money in arts and crafts in a desperate attempt to entertain their children \u2014 and themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hobbies like needlework, woodwork, even adult coloring books, and Lego kits became popular, both to entertain and soothe all generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople had a lot more time on their hands and were looking for things to occupy them,\u201d says Saunders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not sure how everyone else feels but personally, I\u2019ll take playing with pets, electronics and doing arts and crafts, and not increase my purchases of cleaning products.
