This means regularly washing our hair, paying attention to our skincare routines \u2014 not to mention wearing makeup \u2014 taking showers, and applying sunscreen. Or is it just me who\u2019s let myself go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with attention hyper-focused on health throughout the past year, consumer interest is growing in non-toxic beauty and healthcare products, an extension of us wanting to eat foods that are good for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers are pretty stark. Naturally positioned toiletries and other self-care staples grew 14.4% in the U.S., year-over-year for the 52-week period ending January 24, 2021, according to SPINS, a wellness-focused data company in Chicago. During that time, conventional products grew by just 1.4%. Gains were largest in soap and bath prep products, which grew by 42.7% (conventional grew 16.2%) and hair care 14.8% (compared to -1.7%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural is so popular that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.euromonitor.com\/world-market-for-beauty-and-personal-care-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cited as one of the top three claims<\/a> consumers around the world are looking for, according to Euromonitor International, when buying everything from bath and shower products to baby products and deodorants. Both L\u2019Oreal and Estee Lauder have vegan SKUs (the former in plastic-minimizing bottles), but niche brands such as <a href=\"https:\/\/arcticfoxhaircolor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arctic Fox<\/a> (hair care and color), <a href=\"https:\/\/iroirocolors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iroiro<\/a> (hair color), and <a href=\"https:\/\/fentybeauty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fenty Beauty<\/a> (makeup) are also driving interest in the U.S., too. In the U.K., companies <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomtown.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomtown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awakeorganics.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Awake Organics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/odylique.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Odylique<\/a> tout vegan ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Branded Research, a data collection company, 16% of U.S. consumers always avoid specific ingredients like phthalates when buying personal care products and 39% sometimes do so, especially younger consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, according to a Branded Research survey, 37% of U.S. consumers say it\u2019s extremely\/very important to them to purchase natural\/sustainable personal care products, though these products resonate more with younger consumers than older shoppers \u2014 49% of Gen Z, 43% of Millennials, 35% of Gen X, and 29% of Baby Boomers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandy Renee is a sustainable beauty blogger at www.gawdhess.com and says the demand for natural\/organic\/clean health and beauty products is largely driven by Millennials and Gen Z. \u201cWe\u2019re a lot more aware of climate, waste, resources, and toxins,\u201d she says. \u201cA lot of organizations are trying to make those changes but the mainstream consumer is looking for those options.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And they\u2019re prepared to pay for non-toxic products. 23% of Americans say they\u2019re willing to pay more for health and beauty care products with natural ingredients or sustainable packaging, says Branded Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s less movement towards natural products in the U.K., and this is largely due to government regulation. The EU Cosmetics Directive has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safecosmetics.org\/resources\/regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned 1,693<\/a> ingredients from inclusion in beauty products, up from 1,398, while in the U.S. the number of banned ingredients remains at 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"1456\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BANNED-BEAUTY-CHEMICALS.png?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;w=1024&amp;h=1024&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"Banned Beauty Ingredients\" class=\"wp-image-8381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BANNED-BEAUTY-CHEMICALS.png?w=794 794w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BANNED-BEAUTY-CHEMICALS.png?w=164 164w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BANNED-BEAUTY-CHEMICALS.png?w=558 558w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BANNED-BEAUTY-CHEMICALS.png?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Take a closer look at allowed and banned beauty and health ingredients in the EU and U.S. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/blog\/taking-a-closer-look-at-allowed-health-and-beauty-ingredients-in-the-eu-and-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Packaging problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers who care about the lack of toxic ingredients in their beauty products also tend to care about something else: Packaging. Generally, the less of it the better, but there are also better packaging options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recyclability is now table stakes, says Lisa-Marie Assenza, co-founder and CEO of New York City-based Impacked, a marketplace that helps brands source sustainable packaging for beauty and personal care products, but today\u2019s consumers are looking beyond that. Many manufacturers\u2019 packaging is now recyclable as well, though how much something can be recycled depends on the municipality in which a person lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of British companies are being creative with their packaging. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evolvebeauty.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Evolve Beauty<\/a> features reusable packaging; <a href=\"https:\/\/upcirclebeauty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Upcircle\u2019s<\/a> packages can be refilled; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awakeorganics.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Awake Organics<\/a>\u2019 products come in recyclable glass, aluminum, and cardboard; plastic is only used when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div Smaller brands are offering this too, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fentybeauty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fenty Beauty<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milkmakeup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milk Makeup<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovebeautyandplanet.com\/us\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Love, Beauty and Planet<\/a>, whose shampoo and conditioner started being available in aluminum containers this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div
