Just launched last year, the healthy snack brand has already landed on the RangeMe Top Brands in Food &amp; Beverage charts three times (<a href=\"https:\/\/massmarketretailers.com\/rangeme-top-brands-food-beverage-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October 2025<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/massmarketretailers.com\/rangeme-top-brands-food-beverage-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">January 2026<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/massmarketretailers.com\/rangeme-top-brands-food-beverage-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">April 2026<\/a>), and was recently named one of six winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nourishingchange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nourishing Change Conference<\/a> Emerging Brands Competition, which will see its products on the shelves of 500 Kroger stores. The brand inked a deal with Hy-Vee, as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading the charge for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defi-snacks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DEFI<\/a> (which stands for Delicious Energizing Fitness Indulgence) is Founder and CEO Tatyana Jones, who previously spent years climbing the corporate ladder at global Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) giants like Mars, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and Bausch &amp; Lomb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at Jones\u2019 background, it becomes clear why her brand has seen so much success so fast. While DEFI is Jones\u2019 first entrepreneurial venture, her CPG background has more than prepared her to win as a business owner. She was a classically trained brand director, fresh off managing a massive $100 million marketing budget and launching high-profile national commercial campaigns for pharmaceutical brands like Miebo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I caught up with Jones shortly after her Nourishing Change win, and she broke down her journey, from managing hundred-million-dollar corporate budgets to navigating the gritty realities of startup operations and building a functional chocolate brand that refuses to compromise on taste or integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Corporate Heavyweight to Scrappy Entrepreneur<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones\u2019 entrepreneurial seed was planted a decade prior during her post-MBA Graduate Leadership Rotational Program at Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4019-1-small.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4019-1-small.jpg?w=350 350w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4019-1-small.jpg?w=200 200w, https:\/\/rangeme-blog-images.imgix.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4019-1-small.jpg?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When I first thought to myself, I really want to be an entrepreneur, it was during my Mars days,&#8221; Jones recalls. &#8220;During one of those rotations, KIND was being partially acquired by Mars\/Wrigley, and we had KIND Founder Daniel Lubetzky join us on stage. Even though Mars is privately owned, there&#8217;s still a different level of polish that a lot of executives there had. And then you had Daniel, this huge personality. He was on stage, he took a call from his son, and it was super, super fun. He was just so free to be himself. And I was like, wow. He kind of opened up this whole new world to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That town hall encounter inspired her, but Jones wasn&#8217;t one to leap without a safety net. She spent the next ten years mastering white space innovation, shopper marketing for powerhouse accounts like Walmart, and general management. Five months before her breakout year, she realized she had built the ultimate foundation for success on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I felt like I was really good in marketing, brand building and managing a brand, which is essentially being a general manager of a business,\u201d says Jones. \u201cI felt like I&#8217;ve scratched enough surfaces at this point. I can now do it. Cash intensiveness aside, it is the best job I&#8217;ve ever had.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To bridge the gap in her expertise, Jones intentionally surrounded herself with specialized talent. Recognizing that her career had centered heavily on the demand side of business, she brought on an operations master who literally wrote the book on startup supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In a way, this is just another rotation of my life here with Defi Snacks,\u201d she says. \u201cIf they&#8217;re the same as me or if I&#8217;m teaching them to do something that I bring them on to do, they&#8217;re not the right fit. They have to be better than you. They have to be smarter than you in a lot of ways, but especially in that discipline that you&#8217;re bringing them on for.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Anatomy of a Functional Indulgence: \u2018No Fake Shit\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundational thesis of DEFI Snacks is simple yet radical: consumers shouldn&#8217;t have to choose between a genuinely decadent treat and their fitness goals. According to Jones, the current market is flooded with products that either lean too far into empty-calorie indulgence or push toxic diet culture hidden behind misleading &#8220;healthy&#8221; labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The whole idea behind it is there&#8217;s a lot of snacks out there that are either too indulgent, or on the flip side, that say they&#8217;re healthy and they have quite literally garbage ingredients,\u201d says Jones. \u201cAnd fake fats, fake sugars \u2013 your body does not know what to do with those. So we wanted to create this really indulgent snack where it is real chocolate. We don&#8217;t sacrifice on taste.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DEFI approaches formulation through a strategy Jones terms &#8220;Better For You Chocolate Plus.&#8221; The brand uses premium, non-GMO chocolate with real sugar, but carefully modulates the sugar volume so it remains lower than traditional confections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inclusion of time-released proteins is a calculated biochemical choice designed to disrupt the addictive nature of sugar. By grinding casein protein directly into the chocolate matrix and introducing whey protein through a light crisp, DEFI manages appetite spikes organically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Sugar is addictive,\u201d says Jones. \u201cYou just want more and more and more of it. So we add just enough through multiple ways. That is enough to control your sugar right away. And then over time, over a course of literally three to seven hours, depending on how much you eat \u2013 it&#8217;s almost like eating a real nutritious meal, but you&#8217;re eating candy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure the taste profile matched her strict standards, Jones partnered with a master chocolatier whose palate was honed developing major flavor profiles before his company\u2019s acquisition by Mondelez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it was Jones herself who demanded the product&#8217;s secret weapon: sprouted organic buckwheat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Buckwheat was my requirement,\u201d says Jones. \u201cAnd he very creatively made that work. And so you have this multidimensional type of experience where the whey crisp is kind of a softer crisp and then the sprouted organic buckwheat is a much harder, much meatier crisp.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an Eastern European superfood, buckwheat naturally outperforms trendy alternatives like quinoa, according to Jones. Dietitians and Medical Nutritionists<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially a surprise to the brand, certified nutrition experts have widely embraced DEFI Snacks due to its clean ingredient deck and absence of sugar alcohols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t realize it was going to be such a hit with dieticians and nutritionists,&#8221; Jones says. &#8220;Every show we go to, we realize how appreciated we are because everything about our brand is bold, but it&#8217;s that real &#8216;no fake shit&#8217; type of thing. They like that realness about it because it&#8217;s not pretending to be anything else. Your body knows what to do with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. The Exploding GLP-1 Consumer Base<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 26 grams of protein packed into every single bag, DEFI Snacks aligns with one of the most significant macro shifts in modern food history: the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Medical professionals heavily advocate for high protein intake among GLP-1 users to combat the loss of lean body mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is known that as you lose weight while you&#8217;re on GLP-1s, you also lose lean body mass,\u201d says Jones. \u201cBecause of that, it is advised by healthcare professionals that you consume twice the amount of protein than an average person. Now twice as much is even harder. So everything you eat should have protein. Snacks should have protein. So we fit that trend very well.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turning an Axed Corporate Idea Into a Top-Selling Reality<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DEFI product line launched with a calculated menu of flavors, anchored by a unique dark chocolate selection that represents Jones\u2019 ultimate corporate vindication. It\u2019s undisputed top seller is the Pink Himalayan Salt Dark Chocolate (70% Cacao). The flavor was directly inspired by an innovative product line Jones designed during her tenure at Mars\/Wrigley under the Dove brand \u2013 a project corporate leadership ultimately axed due to capital expenditure thresholds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We killed it,\u201d says Jones. \u201cIt was supposed to be a $5 million SKU. We were in the process of changing leadership and we had some rules that anything that&#8217;s under a certain threshold, if it needed capital investment, it would not get approved. And so it got denied. So the Dark Chocolate Pink Himalayan Salt was almost my way of launching that one innovation that I killed back at Mars Wrigley.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike competitor brands that tentatively dust their chocolate with a microscopic hint of sodium, Jones leaned into intensity. &#8220;It is not a touch of salt, it\u2019s a punch of salt, like I like to say,\u201d says Jones. \u201cI like things super salty. I don&#8217;t have the broker relationships in every single one of those cities or every single one of those retailers. And RangeMe kind of brings you that without having to do that so early on. So we&#8217;ve applied to many Immediate Opportunities and are very active on the platform. It&#8217;s like marketing. You got to see something seven times in seven different spots before you actually buy it. So RangeMe is one of those touch points for us with retailers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This digital pipeline paid dividends when DeFi Snacks submitted its product lineup for the Nourishing Change Conference Emerging Brands competition. Out of more than 400 emerging brands that applied via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rangeme.com\/immediate-opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RangeMe&#8217;s Immediate Opportunities<\/a>, only 50 were selected to attend the rigorous three-day face-to-face conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event culminated in an intense judging process where retail executives from Kroger and Hy-Vee assessed brands based on their potential to structurally improve the food system. DEFI Snacks walked away as one of the six winners, capturing a 500-store distribution deal with Kroger \u2013 the brand&#8217;s largest single purchase order to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the sheer distribution volume, the victory offered an invaluable arena to test a critical merchandising hypothesis. Jones, utilizing her classical CPG training, deliberately avoids placing DEFI Snacks in the standard candy aisle, recognizing that the product acts as an innovative category expander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very classically trained,\u201d says Jones. \u201cWalmart only looks for category-growing innovation, for example, and so this was designed to be category-growing. The problem sometimes is buyers don&#8217;t know which set to put it in. Is it a nutritional bar aisle product? Is it the chocolate aisle? Chocolate is the first ingredient, but my hypothesis is that the velocities are going to be better in the nutritional bar\/protein bar aisle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retail execution is reflecting this exact insight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hy-Vee<\/strong> is positioning DeFi Snacks directly within the competitive nutritional and protein bar set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kroger<\/strong> is maximizing the brand&#8217;s visibility by launching them on their high-traffic innovation endcaps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premium independent tastemakers like Dorothy Lane Market in Ohio placed the brand in their protein bar section, where store managers reported the snacks were immediately &#8220;flying off the shelf like hotcakes&#8221; despite being priced above standard MSRP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Startup Pitfalls: The Importance of Saying \u2018No\u2019 to the Wrong Partners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An essential chapter of the DEFI Snacks story is its dedication to rapid pivoting. During the initial 2025 beta test phase, the brand fell victim to a trap common to eager startups: partnering with an unverified, predatory online distributor that promised seamless access to independent boutique retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the program technically placed products on shelves and generated an early sales narrative, the distributor failed to build a functional backend system that allowed independent store owners to easily pay the brand. The brand ultimately took a hard financial hit, absorbing the cost of substantial free product inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than letting the setback stall her momentum, Jones embraced the experience as a vital operational lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I believe in failing,\u201d says Jones. \u201cI think everyone should fail, but you should fail quickly and figure out how to pivot. Independent retailers are amazing, but you have to sell yourself in, which is almost as hard as selling yourself into someone that has a thousand stores. And then on the backend, you have to convince them to then pay you. I do not have the resources to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brand completely re-engineered its independent retail model. Moving forward, DEFI strictly mandates that independent accounts must route through authorized, established distributors or verified online wholesale platforms, completely eliminating direct single-store fulfillment risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purpose-Driven DNA: Lifting Up Female Entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Jones, building a successful company meant embedding social responsibility directly into the brand&#8217;s operations from day one, avoiding the superficial marketing ploys common in large corporate networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve been on a few purpose-driven brands back in my CPG days and every brand wants to do a purpose, but sometimes it just felt like it was inconsistent with the DNA of the brand,\u201d says Jones. \u201cSo when I started DEFI, I wanted purpose to be in our DNA. And clearly, DEFI is everything that I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confronted by the systemic funding inequities facing women in business, Jones committed DeFi Snacks to allocating 1% of gross sales to fund female-owned startups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proving her commitment to immediate action, Jones purposefully restructured the pledge from a percentage of <em>net profits<\/em> to a percentage of <em>gross sales<\/em>. This ensures that even in its early hyper-growth phase before achieving formal corporate profitability, the brand actively distributes capital to women founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following her recent victory at the Enthuse Foundation Pitch Competition \u2013 a prominent organization providing vital resources to women entrepreneurs \u2013 DEFI is establishing a dedicated grant program to directly fund and mentor the next generation of female business leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Words of Advice for Emerging Founders<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones shared a crucial piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs trying to break through the industry noise: build a tight mental filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Find the people that are <em>your <\/em>people,\u201d she says. \u201cNot everyone is going to be your person. Actually, most people are not going to be your people. And just tune out those negative voices. Unless it&#8217;s your customer, unless it&#8217;s literally the buyer that you&#8217;re trying to target, their opinion is just an opinion. Most people will tell you you can&#8217;t do something. If they don&#8217;t get it and they have really negative feedback that you don&#8217;t agree with, move on. There&#8217;s going to be someone that is for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With massive Kroger and Hy-Vee rollouts on the immediate horizon, a highly anticipated direct-to-consumer (DTC) digital launch spearheaded by a newly appointed Head of Digital, and an upcoming expansion into foodservice channels with <a href=\"https:\/\/ecrm.marketgate.com\/Sessions\/Category\/FoodService\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECRM\u2019s Foodservice Sessions<\/a> in September, Jones is proving that her conviction is well-founded.
